🎯Objective
Build your own Antarctic ocean by placing cards around your research base. Collect enough krill and fish to attract sea creatures worth victory points. The first player to reach 8 victory points triggers the end of the game, but everyone finishes the current round before the winner is decided.
➡️Setup
- Shuffle all 72 Ocean cards into one face-down deck.
- Each player takes a research base board.
- Give the first-player duck token to the starting player.
- In a 4-player game, the fourth player starts with 1 heart on their board.
- At the start of each round, reveal 3 cards per player into the middle of the table as the market (6 cards for 2 players, 9 for 3 players, 12 for 4 players).
☑️ On your turn
Choose one action:
- Take a card from the market and add it to your ocean.
- Take a card from the market and place it in your reserve.
- Play the card from your reserve into your ocean.
- Pass your turn.
🃏The two types of cards
Ocean Floor cards
- Place them directly on the table
- They must touch your existing layout or your research base.
- You may rotate them any way you like.
- They may not overlap other cards.
Surface cards
- These represent animals.
- You can only play one if you have enough krill or fish shown on the card.
- They must overlap at least two existing cards (or one card plus your base).
- They can never be placed directly on the table.
- They cannot cover an iceberg.
- Many surface cards give victory points.
Reserve
You can keep one card in reserve.
- If you already have a reserve card and take another, the old one is discarded.
- This lets you save a useful card or prevent another player from taking it.
🔚End of a round
A round ends when:
The ‘1st player’ Duck token is given to the player sitting to the left. Then, as
before, draw 3 cards per player (6 cards with 2 players, 9 cards with 3 players
and 12 cards with 4 players) and place them facing up in the centre of the table
to put together a new market
🏁End of the game
When someone reaches 8 victory points, finish the current round. Then:
- Count all victory points from cards in play.
- Cards still in your reserve do not score.
- If tied, the player with the most krill wins.
- The only part that's a little tricky when learning is how surface cards overlap the cards beneath them to use the required resources (krill and fish).Think of Ocean Floor cards as the seabed you build first. Surface cards are like animals swimming above it. They must be supported by the existing ocean (at least two cards) rather than floating in empty space, and they can't cover icebergs!
